1875 Excerpt: . . . to-day. Not that I dont always think of you, --every bit of every day. You know that quite well. But I am thinking about you very very much to-day particularly, because it is your birthday, and I do so want to give you a kiss and a present, darling Hugh. I cant do that, so I am going to begin my letter to you instead. I am sitting all alone in the dining-room, and Fido is lying close to my feet, just blinking one eye every time I move. He is so good, Hugh. He never wants punishing now. He always does just exactly what I tell him dear old fellow! And isnt it funny he has taken to Gerard so much, and he will obey Gerard almost as well as me, but he seems never to think of Uncle Norman as his master. I always say Uncle Norman and Aunt Elsie now, because they want it, and Mrs. Knight has just told me to call her Aunt Netta. It is very nice to do so, only I dont think Chenda likes it. She always takes such care to tell everybody that I am not really her cousin. I love Aunt Elsie very much, Hugh, --oh, so much. If I had you too, I should like to live with her always; only I would rather live with you all alone, you know. But I do think she is so sweet. You cant think how fond she and Aunt Netta are of one another. But I cant see that they are alike. Aunt Netta is so pretty and bright, and always seems to want to be helping somebody. But Aunt Elsie--O Hugh, I do love her dear gentle pale face, and soft way of doing things. She couldnt say a hard word if she tried. Shes so beautiful--at least her smile is. Do you know, Uncle Norman sometimes lets me go into the study, and he tells me stories. And once he told me that when Aunt Elsie was a girl, her papa and mamma were very poor, and Aunt Elsie used to work so dreadfully ha. . Please click here to ask a question
