Pic is a small, Black child from North Carolina who, upon his grandfather and caregiver’s death, is taken by his brother from his aunt’s dysfunctional home to live with him in New York City. Once there, Pic witnesses his brother’s hardships after he loses both his jobs in one day and must send his pregnant girlfriend to live with her sister in San Francisco. The brothers must then hitch and bum their way across the country to reunite with her.

Pic is Kerouac's final novel and one of his most unusual. Narrated by ten-year-old Pictorial Review Jackson in a North Carolina vernacular, the novel charts the adventures of Pic and his brother Slim as they travel from the rural South to Harlem in the 1940s.
