Orphan Lamb by Ann Purser

Young love, old jealousies, new babies and aging grandparents, tradition and innovation - all are familiar ingredients in the fascinating make up of village life. In Round Ringford, idyllically set in middle England, things are always the same and always different. Peggy Palmer at the Post Office Stores watched as young Mandy and Robert Bates, newly married and with everything before them, run into tragedy and struggle. She sees the impact on the village when Nanny Bridged, blonde and leggy, arrives at the Hall to take charge of the latest in the long line of Standings, and listens with amusement as Ivy, Ellen and Doris, nicknamed 'the three witches of Ringford' make their crabby comments on village goings-on.

Peggy looks out of the stores window at spreading chestnuts, broad greensward, sparkling river, rolling woods and sees amongst all this loveliness herself and her beloved Bill, her friends and her enemies, all caught up in problems which are often helped and occasionally hindered by the intimate community of the small English village.

There is comedy as well as tragedy, joy as well as sorrow. And in the end, as Peggy sets out on a new path, she has every reason to look forward with optimism and excitement.
