The narrator of this tale, John Duncan Harrison, was just one of many adventurers who founded whaling stations on the northern tip of the South Island over 100 years ago.
Harrison a convict, was sent to NSW, escaped and eventually established his own whaling station at Tar White (Te Awaiti) from where he led his men into Cook Strait to capture migratory whales.
