For Those Who Understand: Tales from New Zealand’s back country
By Mike McGee

Brought up, in his early years, on a remote hill-country station behind Gisborne, it is perhaps a natural progression that Mike has spent a 40 year working life as a shepherd, professional pig-hunter, shearer, and for 15 years, as studmaster of one of the country's largest Perendale sheep studs, in hill-country behind Waverley, in southern Taranaki.

Other interests have been the breeding and training of a large number of sheep-dogs over the last 30 years and for nearly that long, a strong interest in a wide range of leatherwork. Mike is a foundation member of the Association of N.Z. Leatherworkers and has developed his craft to its present stage, in the hope that, having retired from the land, he can work with leather as a full-time occupation.

He still retains a great love of the bush and the mountains and spends as much time as possible deer-stalking and trout fishing in the remote mountain rivers. For many years Mike has recorded in verse, the hunting and fishing trips into the central North Island wilderness areas, and this book is the first publication of these writings.
