from d/j:

Robert Burn's best poems survive today as honest and forthright as ever...
Unfortunately, Burns had to bear the burden of being the poet laureate of Scottish sentimentality and nostalgia, and he has been endlessly quoted in misleading and stereotyped fragments, in the name of patriotism. David Daiches, himself a Scotsman, restores the balance in this collection.
The poems were chosen to reveal the full range of Burn's craft. They have been separated into five categories...
David Daiches has also provided a biography of the poet and an introduction to his work. This is a marvellously well-chosen collection of marvellous poems, and the glossary given in the margin of each poem removes the last hindrance to delight.
