Description

The Falling by Kimberly Humphreys

Pain, the all over kind that ache's so bad it's nearly agonizing. Cold, why am I so cold? Shivering, I faintly hear chirping coming from above me, a sound that would be pleasant if not for the fact that I have been asleep outside, with nothing but the cruelty of pain to cover me. Slowly I open my eyes to come out of the blackness. I see green and brown, tall, wooden above me, thick and moist all around me. Looking around I know the names of the trees above me, of the sparrow chirping who must have woke me, as well as the dirt below me, but I cannot remember my own... She knows she should run and that the danger is to the south, but doesn't know why. Driving his '69 Pontiac Trans am south on Angeles Forest Highway Dr. Chimes finds this terrified young girl. Try to unravel her past, as she tries to discover the reason for the innate trust for her rescuer, Dr. Chimes, as they race to get out of California, running from an organism that is destruction incarnate; devouring everything in its path. Unfold in family dysfunction as Dr. Chimes' mother, Joanne, an anti-feminist chameleon and his half-brother, Darrel, a brash and cynical Marine complicate their journey, as they try to find anywhere that is safe. Brace yourself, because on this ride, nothing seems to survive. The Falling has a unique flow going from the perspective of two people as they progress from strangers to lovers, capturing the perceptual changes of a man and women as they fall in love, all while the world around them crumbles and falls.
