Classical shipping novel about loss and success Holland's glory is the great classical novel by Jan de Hartog and the life story of John Walker, a man who made a meteoric career from sailor to mate and eventually brought to an internationally renowned captain of the tugboat. But before it came, happened a lot in the lives of these 'skipper alongside God. Fate would strike many times and Jan Walker had to collect heavy setbacks uitzuigerij by shipowners, the death of his wife after the birth of their second son and three months in prison because he had beaten the deputy director of a shipowner office together. Ten days after the book was published in May 1940, the Germans invaded the neutral Netherlands. The book describes the heavy, dangerous and underpaid live in shipping and although no political, let alone anti-Nazi message contains, besides the book became a bestseller in the occupied Netherlands a symbol against the German occupation. De Hartog himself thus was forced into hiding and eventually even a risky attempt to take flight to England.
