It is 1939 and young American art student David Halifax has ventured to Paris just before the outbreak of World War II. An art dealer puts some of his paintings on the market attempting to pass them off as the work of an Old Master, but when the ruse is uncovered it is Halifax who is arrested and charged with forgery.
