Description
Royal Doulton by Jennifer Queree
This book traces the history and ceramic techniques of Doulton art ceramics as illustrated in the New Zealand Exhibition, and contains many new photographs of treasure from the exhibition - many of which are rare examples held in private collections and never before publicly exhibited. In 1815, in the London parish of Lambeth, a young potter named John Doulton invested his life's savings of #100 in a small pottery business. In the years which have followed the firm now known as Royal Doulton has become one of the famous names in British ceramic history. Over the years the Doulton potteries have successfully catered for changing tastes in domestic decorative ceramics, while maintaining a reputation for high-quality, innovative design and production. Collectors and students of ceramic history have been fascinated and intrigued by the extraordinary variety of Doulton ceramic bodies, processes and techniques. Many British households contain Doulton decorative wares and, while museums contain excellent examples, the greatest number and variety of treasures are still to be found in these private collections. The Royal Doulton New Zealand Exhibition of 1992-3 is the most important display of Doulton ceramics for nearly twenty years, bringing together pieces from throughout New Zealand, and drawing on collections in the United Kingdom and Australia. It celebrates, in particular, the centenary of the first major showing of the Doulton art ceramics from the Burslem pottery, today the headquarters of Royal Doulton. In 1893, at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Doulton of Burslem stunned the ceramic world.
