Description

THE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT OF INDIAN ARCHITECTURE

by Claude Batley, F.R.I.B.A. formerly Professor of Architecture at the Government School of Art, Bombay

First published in 1934 by Alec Tiranti Ltd This 3rd revised enlarged edition published in Great Britain 1973 by Academy Editions

96 pages

hardcover with d/j - approx 30cm x 22cm - sticker residue on cover with d/j showing some wear - no inscriptions

This series of measured drawings and details has answered a need felt by every student of Indian architecture since it first appeared in 1934. Rather than approaching examples of Indian architecture from the usual archaeological point of view this book examines them in structural terms and treats the many influential but often-neglected aspects of smaller domestic architecture as well as well-known monumental and ornate constructions.

In this revised edition the drawings, all the work of Indian architectural students, have been supplemented by related archaelogical survey photographs which, along with their descriptive notes, offer all the material essential to a basic understanding of the elements of Indian architecture.

70 plates including 18 photographs
