The life and work of Peter Paul Rubens, the greatest of Baroque artists, are inseparable from the story of the age of fanaticism, intrigue and splendour in which he lived. A passionate Catholic and a dedicated enjoyer of life, he managed to combine an immense creative output with a lifetime of diplomatic work behind the scenes in the service of the government of the Spanish Netherlands. Conscious of his own glory as an artist, he was knighted by the Kings of England and Spain.

The enormous range of his art is illustrated, from pagan baccanalia to rustic still-lifes, from both domestic and official portraits to the decoration of the church of St-Charles-Borromee? How did Rubens ever manage to accomplish so much? Pierre Cabanne throws interesting light on his collaboration with Van Dyck, Jan Brueghel and with specialist animal painters; but his verdict is that Rubens left very little work to assistants: all that matters is his vast, exhilarating output is by Rubens himself.
