Derek Hill An Appreciation by Grey Gowrie

"Born in Hampshire, Derek Hill first worked as a theatre designer in Leningrad in the 1930s. His long association with Ireland began when he visited Glenveagh Castle, County Donegal to paint the portrait of the Irish-American art collector, Henry McIlhenny. Hill enjoyed increasing success as a portrait painter in the 1960s and 1970s His subjects included many notable composers, musicians, politicians and statesmen, including the Prince of Wales. A Retrospective exhibition of Hill's work took place at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1998. In 1999, he was made an honorary Irish citizen by Irish President Mary McAleese. In this work, Grey Gowrie rates Hill's landscapes to be as good as those of Jack Yeats.; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings" - Amazon
