Description
This is an auction for RITA ANGUS, by Janet Paul, Melvin Day, Anne Kirker, Michael Dunn, Ronald Brownson & Anthony Mackle.
The catalogue of an exhibition at the National Art Gallery in 1982.
"Rita Angus is one of the most-loved New Zealand artists. She was born in 1908 and studied at Canterbury College of Art in Christchurch at a time when the city boasted a lively artistic and literary scene, with women playing an important role in its cultural life. She was part of an avant-garde artistic scene known as "The Group" and experimented with a "modern" style characterized by bold design, simplified form and high-keyed colour. Rita Angus is well known for her landscapes, such as Cass and Central Otago, but is perhaps best known for her portraits. These include numerous self-portraits, as well as the celebrated painting of Betty Curnow and another of the Birkenshaw twins, one of whom is a young Fay Weldon."
