Tessai: Master of the Literati Style
By Taro Odakane

Tomioka Tessai Occupies a unique position in the, history of recent Japanese art. Although he is widely regarded as the most significant painter to appear in the last hundred years in Japan, he paradoxically stands clearly apart from the main artistic currents and developments of the period, which had no influence on his own works.

For the translation and adaptation of the original Japanese edition on which this book is based, the publisher was fortunate to have gained the services of Mr. Money L. Hickman, who is himself a scholar in the field of Far Eastern art history.

The colour reproductions found in this book have been carefully chosen to exhibit Tessai's many faceted genius to the fullest. Each is accompanied by valuable commentary on the technique, historical background, and artistic significance of the painting. The author provides us an insight into Tessai's life and work that could only have been gained through years of dedicated study. Thus we learn not only about Tessai's paintings, but also about the times in which he lived and the people who influenced him most.
