Listing Detail Tabs

For most of its history the Waikato community of Te Awamutu has been a frontier town. Centuries before the coming of the Pakcha the Tainui Maori, who lived and roamed on the land now circumscribed by the present town, marked this locality with the name 'Awamutu' — the end of the river. For the Maori, Te Awamutu was also the frontier — the limit of canoe navigation.

John Morgan, the missionary who arrived in 1834, also designated Te Awamutu as a frontier, this time as the frontier of his brand of Christian civilisation. With the defeat of the Waikato 'rebels', in 1863, Imperial troops marched into Te Awamutu and established a third frontier, with redoubts built and manned against possible counterattack from the hostile King Country to the south.

Railway construction, King Country prohibition of liquor, and the development of regional dairying, have all added to Te Awamutu's frontier roles.
