'Villi the Clown' by William Campbell.
Faber & Faber Ltd. First Edition 1981
Hardcover with dustjacket, 256 pages, maps.
In very good original condition, all pages clean.

"William Campbell's fascinating experience of Soviet Russia is unique. From Stalin to Brezhnev, through wartime and purges, he worked and traveled throughout the USSR - as a clown. Then in 1977, he defected and returned to his homeland, Britain. Here, in his own words, is the story of that extraordinary career.

His family were founder members of the British Communist movement in the 1920's and, as a penniless teenager at the height of the Depression, inspired by the hope of a better future, he took the boat to Leningrad in search of work.

Quickly finding a job in a factory and performing to his workmates, he discovered his vocation as an entertainer, soon he was singing and playing in a popular jazz orchestra.

He toured the USSR and finally joined the Soviet Circus as Villi the clown. His account of his life is rich in anecdote and excitement and above all his extraordinary autobiography captures what it was like to be a citizen in Soviet Russia during its momentous years."
