Love in the Driest Season by Neely Tucker

A foreign correspondent for the Detroit Free Press in the late 1990s, Tucker describes his attempts with his wife, Vita, to adopt a sick, orphaned child in Zimbabwe amidst the breakdown of President Mugabe's government. The impact of AIDS was just making itself felt, leaving Zimbabwe with over ten million orphans. At Chinyaradzo Children's Home, an underfunded, understaffed orphanage in the capital of Harare, where he and Vita volunteered, the couple met and bonded with Chipo, a critically ill infant girl. Government officials were reluctant to let the Tuckers adopt Chipo (whose name means gift), but they were allowed to take her home as a foster child. As the baby's precarious health improved, the Tuckers began the frustratingly long adoption process. The author punctuates his tale with reflections on his life as a white Mississippian in a mixed marriage. His journalist's clarity and crispness are tempered with a warm sensitivity. Michael Kramer reads clearly and intensely; highly recommended for public libraries.-Nancy R. Ives, SUNY at Geneseo Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
