The most historic labour dispute in NZ history: the 1951 confrontation and lockout of waterfront workers. This 151 strike was only broken after the government declared a state of emergency and used troops to clear the backlog on the wharves. A fascinating insight into unionism includes other accounts of the 1951 lockout and assessment of the tactics adopted by the Waterside Worker's Union. Jock Barnes' story is also placed in the wider context of NZ industrial relations at the turn of the century, and finds in it a lesson for the present situation where membership has fallen dramatically and where cynicism about unionism is widespread.
