Ranging widely over time and place, Asa Briggs highlights continuities and changes in society in England from prehistory to the present day.

Literature, art and politics are investigated as aspects and gauges of human experience; research in related disciplines is discussed and changes in historical interpretations explained.

English historian and Victoria era specialist Lord Briggs also offers his own, personal, view of social history.

During World War II Briggs served in the Intelligence Corps, and worked at the British wartime code-breaking station, Bletchley Park.

He was a member of "the Watch" in Hut 6, the section deciphering Enigma machine messages from the German Army and Luftwaffe.

He died in March this year, aged 94

Says one Amazon reviewer: “Briggs' history traces the development of English culture from prehistoric times to the present. He draws insightful connections between trends and events, and supplements his written history with a wealth of illustrations that, rather than merely illuminating the text, form an integral part of the understanding of the way all things English have emerged into the present.”

A Social History of England by Asa Briggs is a 1983 first edition published by The Viking Press, New York.

It is a quality as-new larger-format 320-page hard cover with dust jacket packed with maps, photographs and illustrations in colour and black and white.
