• THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY 1307-1399 by May McKisack (1959; 598 pages) - "This book discusses the political crises of the reigns of Edward II, Edward III, and Richard II and takes account of legal, parliamentary, and administrative developments. It examines the origins of the Hundred Years War, deals briefly with its course, and considers the impact of the war upon contemporary society. Anglo-papal relations and the condition of the English Church form the subject of one chapter; heretical, educational, and literary movements of another. Social and economic topics discussed include the effects of the Black Death, and the causes and symptoms of agrarian unrest, the fluctuations of trade and industry, and the multiplication of guilds."

• THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY 1399-1485 by E F Jacob (1961; 735 pages) - "The failure of the Lancastrian dynasty, after its early struggles and its apparent consolidation, tends here to be attributed to improvident commitments abroad and a financial and administrative technique inadequate for its responsibilities; and the contest between Lancaster and York is viewed not so much as a unique struggle between defined parties as typical of the efforts of noble houses to maintain and improve their position by the exercise of patronage and influence in a society that was rapidly changing. There are revised portraits of Henry V and Edward IV, the latter being regarded as a more practical administrator than his predecessors. The last chapter deals with notable English achievements in the life of the spirit."
