An interesting little gem, published by the Reader's Union in 1971, Napoleon Surrenders is a very readable account of exactly what the title implies.

The time frame is the relatively short period between the battle of Waterloo, 18th June, and Boney's departure for St. Helena, on 8th August.

Whilst Martineau's book is, on the whole, admirably even-handed, one does sniff a wee whiff of that old 'perfidious Albion' line. The book makes some claims to novelty (or at least it did at the time of publication) due to the inclusion of certain letters, printed 'for the first time', including a letter or two Boney wrote to the Prince Regent. In these and other epistles, the man who once ruled much of Europe, and is irked by being addressed as a mere General - just as Britain stood alone in being his most constant and implacable enemy, Britain also stood alone in refusing ever to recognise him as emperor - appeals to the British love of liberty and sense of fair play, claiming he's receiving neither.
