Yet Wellington has not always been so assured or so affluent. WELLINGTON: TELLING TALES recalls the fluctuating fortunes that made the 20th century a roller-coaster ride for the capital and its inhabitants. In the early 1900s, Wellington was the flourishing 'Empire City', its pre-eminence based on its port. In the 1920s prosperity vanished with the onset of the Great Depression. During the 1930s and 1940s life in Wellington was hard, yet many of the capital’s landmarks were built then and the city hosted the wonderfully successful 1940 Centennial Exhibition. After the Second World War good times returned and the welfare state promised prosperity for all..."
