Going Abroad - The MacGibbon family and other early Scottish Emigrants to Otago and Southland, New Zealand

John MacGibbon

excellent condition, pb, 1997, 231 pgs. illustrated with b&w pictures

The MacGibbon family and other early Scottish emigrants to Otago and Southland, New Zealand. large Softcover, First Edition 1997, Black and White Photos, maps, illustrations, 231 Pages, Published by the Ngaio Press Wellington. A Fine Copy.

'John MacGibbon fitted neatly into the emigrant capitalist mould. He was respectable, and as a small businessman he was in a position to invest in the colony and employ labour. His Glasgow business was in decline, and he needed to take drastic action or face the posibility of slithering down to the lower ranks of society- a common middle class fear that emigration promoters openly played on. Being a devout member of the free church, his religious credentials were impeccable. John MacGibbon and his family began a new life at the 'Ends of the Earth' in 1849. This book looks at why they did it, how they did it and how they managed in their new country- first in Dunedin and later in Eastern Southland. MacGibbon family members are central to the story, but they are not the only characters in the plot. Going Abroad attempts to give a broad picture of the emigration and early colonial experience of the Scots who emigrated to New Zealand's Deep South'

This flowing tale, richly presented with plenty of illustrations, received an excellent review in the Dominion when it first came out. An inspiration for aspiring authors thinking of writing up their family history.
