A hundred years ago the Rutherfords were a Canterbury dynasty, the seven sons of poor Scottish migrants having acquired huge tracts of land. By hard work and astute dealings they, like others nearby, earned the name 'Amuri Wool Kings.'

It is an inside story of seven families that worked hard and played hard, contributing to their communities, cooperating and disagreeing, and sharing successes and setbacks. George and Isobel Rutherford - the ploughman and the laundress from Jedburgh - made their start during twenty years spent in Australia where their sons were born.

Andrew of Mendip Hills, the confident Liberal parliamentarian, opposing Tommy Taylor; William of Montrose, the expert judge of dog trials.

John of Opawa station, South Canterbury, horse breeder and handler par excellence; Robert of Mt. Nessing,

John's partner at The Mistake station; George of Dalethorpe, breeder of champion Merinos and top New Zealand marksman, but barred for life by the Racing Conference.

Duncan the squire of Leslie Hills and promoter of Hamner Springs, every seeking to enlarge his empire.

Edmund of Kekerengu in Marlborough who survived into the 1940s. Sportsmen, benefactors and churchmen, businessmen as well as farmers, the Rutherfords of Canterbury left visible evidence of their activities - not only large country houses, but St. Andrew's College, Warners Hotel, the Mt. Cook Company, and Amuri Courts.
