The Colonial One
Lorna Monckton of Newstead
By Dorothea Joblin
Whitcombe and Tombs
1st Edition publiched 1975

Mainly this book is about people. In particular it focuses on Lorna Monckton’s own outsized and exhuberant family, the Wairarapa Monktons.
Frederick Monckton, landowner from Kent, arrived in Wellington with his family in 1884 and took over a whole boardinghouse to put them up. When he bought Newstead, a 500 acre farm in Featherston, he had straight away to set about extending the already large house. Unaltered, it could hardly be expected to fit him and his wife Ann plus their brood of fifteen!.
During the next thirty years this handsome gabled house saw a lot of life – and sheltered a lot of Moncktons.
…. In recording her full life’s story with wit and accuracy, Dorothea Joblin has also produced a colourful portrait of a spectacular family, set in a colonial era not often explored by contemporary NZ authors.
