This is an auction for THE MAKING OF A NEW ZEALANDER by Alan Mulgan.

The biography of Alan Mulgan, writer and journalist (1881-1962).

"Born in a time when many New Zealanders still referred to England as home. Their attachment was not merely nostalgic or sentimental, it was also economic. Exports and imports readily reflected this - New Zealand was Britain's farm in the south and Britain was New Zealand's factory in the north. In 1926 Alan Mulgan travelled to England for the first time; the experience resulted in this, his most popular book. Standing between the Victorian and colonial values of his father's contemporaries and the 'modern' nationalistic ideals of his sons, articulating and attempting to reconcile the oppositions, Mulgan was an important transitional figure in New Zealand culture and literature."
