Spire on the Hill - A History of St Andrews’s Church in the Epsom District 1846-1996
By Rory Sweetman

Signed by author

Although well endowed in beauty and history, St Andrew's Church Epsom is not rich in historical records. Unlike its near neighbours St Peter's Onehunga and St Mark's Remuera, almost none of the early parish records have survived the toll of time. Much the same can be said of the Epsom district.

The story of St Andrew's in the Epsom community has had to be reconstructed from the surviving fragmentary sources. Much re mains shrouded in mystery, but it is clear how closely the church touched Epsom life. The first church-school, erected in 1846, was the second place of worship (after Old St Paul's) in the infant settlement of Auckland. Its replacement, the inspiration of John Kinder in 1867, survives in spirit today, though much altered in form. Happily, recurrent calls to demolish the building and replace it with a brick edifice were not heeded. The church grew with the district, successive enlargements in 1896, 1914 and 1926 keeping pace with a rising population. What remains is a pearl beyond price, a direct link with New Zealand's first Anglican Bishop, George Augustus Selwyn.
