A History of the Garden in New Zealand
By Matthew Bradbury

The New Zealand Garden is a daily enjoyment. For hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders gardening is a satisfying, creative activity - almost a national pastime whether cultivating vegetable or flower gardens, or tending indoor plants or a window box. A History of the Garden in New Zealand is the story of this national passion from first roots in traditional Maori horticulture and the early years of European settlement, through 150 years of fads and fancies to the present-day.

It is a history that traces the evolution of the garden as the product of many activities and influences, not least the work of botanists, horticulturalists, plantsmen, seedsmen and nurserymen, all of whom have influenced the colour, smell and form of the garden.

At the same time the country's early town-planners were setting aside areas for public parks and reserves which eventually became the domains, parks, city squares, town belts and botanic gardens we know today, and which also feature in this story of the New Zealand garden.

A History of the Garden in New Zealand is the work of nine contributors, specialists in the fields of archaeology, garden history and landscape design, under the general editorship of Matthew Bradbury, a landscape designer and architect. The work has been assisted by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
