Description
SPANZ South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand and their DC-3 Viewmasters Richard Waugh & Peter Layne SPANZ made a big splash in New Zealand's highly regulated aviation environment of the 1960s. This book tells how the airline boldly challenged the air licensing bureaucracy, political establishment and the government owned NAC monopoly of the day. Specially modified DC-3 Viewmasters - with the largest windows ever seen on a New Zealand airliner - pioneered group tourist flying and new airline services to provincial areas like Central Otago, Lake Taupo and the Wairarapa. Finance for SPANZ came from over 800 small shareholders, making for a truly private enterprise people's airline, and from Ansett Australia - the first overseas investment in a New Zealand domestic airline. SPANZ introduced innovative airline marketing designed to appeal to the growing tourist trade. This included the first in-flight meals on regional routes in New Zealand. SPANZ customer service was a refreshing change and still provides a valuable lesson for today's airlines. Illustrated by many rare photographs, this story describes how SPANZ served 21 New Zealand towns and cities in a nation-wide network, with a quarter of a million Kiwis experiencing the 'Delicate-art-of-Spanzmanship'. The book contains a detailed history of the SPANZ DC-3 Viewmaster aircraft, a summary of Ansett connections in New Zealand 1960-2000 and a full page aircraft profile, by Mel Douglas, of Viewmaster ZK-CAW. Over 120 photographs (the best collection of DC-3 Viewmaster photographs available anywhere), including 14 in colour. Craig Printing Co, Invercargill, 2000 Soft Cover
