Description
This is an auction for REINING IN THE DINOSAUR: THE STORY BEHIND THE REMARKABLE TURNAROUND OF NEW ZEALAND POST, by Vivienne Smith.
"New Zealand Post began operating on 1 April 1987 - one of the three businesses created by the corporatisation of the New Zealand Post Office - and the one everybody expected to fail. Postal services around the world lost money - the majority continue to do so. It was not considered that the mere application of commercial practices to New Zealands postal service would reverse a pattern of escalating losses, predicted to reach $40 million in the 1987-88 year. So pessimistic was the outlook for Post that Geoffrey Palmer, the politician credited with coming up with the legislative solution that enabled the governments corporatisation programme to proceed, was heard to ask: "What are we going to do about poor old Post? Shall we give it away?" Instead the company astonished observers and staffers alike, by making an after tax profit of $72.1 million in its first year. In the ten years since it has been a corporation, it has not cost the taxpayer a cent. Rather it has contributed a $561 million in taxes and dividends to the country. Today, New Zealand Post is considered a benchmark of excellence in the postal world for the management and measurement systems it has introduced to the mail business - its expertise is now sought by many international postal services."
