Description
Captain Cook Voyages of Discovery Compiled by John Barrow from the Authorised 18th Century Admiralty Editions and Documents
The voyages of discovery took place between 1768 and 1779. On each of these voyages, Captain James Cook of the British Royal Navy kept a log or journal recording faithfuly scenes and adventures, from the uncharted seas of the Antarctic Ocean to the islands of Tahiti. During his first voyage, a third of Cook's ship's company died from malaria and dysentery. Cook took great care on later voyages to stock his ships with at least two years' supply of lemons and other food to maintain his sailors' health. Cook was killed by islanders before finishing the account of his third and final voyage; his coadjutator, James King, completed the narrative. This concise edition is taken from the 1860 compilation by John Barrow.
These straightforward journals vividly convey all the hardships, the wonders, the trials and tribulations of Cook's great voyages.
With a new introduction and maps.
