from back-cover:
Reference to 'Victorian values', and whether we should return to them or escape from them, is a commonplace today...
The Victorians were as complex as ourselves, pulled this way and that by faith and doubt, by assurance and unease; and theirs was an age of unprecedented change. Can it all have been as straightforward as politicians and commentators like to pretend?
As before (1st edition), the collection ranges widely over the Victorian world. It looks at the attitudes and influence of such household names as Gladstone, Chamberlain and Dickens, and key Victorian standard-bearers like Samuel Miles and Pugin: but there are also profiles of less familiar, but no less intensely 'Victorian', figures like Titus Salt, Edward Carpenter, Stewart Headlam and Mary Kingsley.
The four new chapters focus on 'The Bourgeois Cult of Home' (John Tosh); on Josephine Butler, the pioneer of feminism (Trevor Fisher); on William Morris (Charles Harvey and Jon Press); and on Kipling's imperialism (Denis Judd). As before, the book contains an equally diverse range of curious and entertaining illustrations.

In drawing these and other strands together, VICTORIAN VALUES mirrors the richness and diversity of the Victorian age itself, and it will richly reward anyone interested in the nineteenth century and its legacy, and its relevance to the modern world. Please click here to ask a question
