"The essays here presented honour a pioneer anthropologist, Henry Devenish Skinner, who in 1919 (when he was designated Lecturer in Ethnology in the University of Otago), became the first teacher of anthropology in New Zealand, as indeed in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere. Since those early days Dr Skinner's influence as a teacher and practising ethnologist has been profound: to talk of anthropology in New Zealand is to talk of H D Skinner. This memoir recounts something of his achievements and indicates a little of all that we, the contributors, like so many others in New Zealand, owe to him. With Elsdon best and Sir Peter Buck he ranks as one of the most notable of our 'founding ancestors'..."
