Yesterday’s Children
By Sally Kevill-Davies

The antiques and history of childcare

An enthralling and vividly written account of the history of child raising over the last four centuries, and the everyday objects which were used.

Childbirth and childcare have always been contentious topics, and the superstition and ignorance which surrounded them helped to account for the high child mortality rates. Pain in childbirth was thought to be good for a woman's soul until the reign of Queen Victoria; swaddling was used to ensure that an infant's limbs would grow straight, yet babies were forced on to their feet in baby-walkers to suppress their `animal' instincts for crawling. New-born babies were `farmed out' to dubious wet-nurses in the country, and fresh fruit and vegetables were excluded from an already inadequate diet, since they were thought to give children worms.

But this is far from being an unhappy book. The love of mothers for their children was expressed in a multitude of objects for eating, sleeping, dress, play, christening, education and every stage of their development. It is the history of these objects which this book describes, thus revealing a fascinating, and often amusing, insight into an aspect of social history that has hitherto been largely ignored.
