Tom Heeney was born in Gisborne in 1898 one of a a large Irish family, went to St Mary’s School in Gisborne and died of old age in Miami, USA

His father taught him how to box before he left School very young to became a Plumber
He enlisted for WWI but the War ended when he was in England on final training.
Returning to Gisborne, he became a Professional Boxer, a career which took him to live in the USA and made him a lot of money and which culminated in a World heavyweight fight with Gene Tunny, which he lost

Lots of old photos including one taken with George Nepia in1928
