John Hobbs 1800-1883. Wesleyan Missionary to the Ngapuhi Tribe of Northern New Zealand. TMI Williment. 1985 1st edition. Government Printer, Wellington

John Hobbs came to NZ in the 1820s to work in the Weslyan Mission Station at Whangaroa. After its destruction by Maori in 1827 he established a Mission in the Hokianga.
He was fluent in Ngapuhi and Rarawa Maori and acted as a mediator and peacemaker. Hymns in Maori composed by Hobbs are still used in the Church

Gives a description of a voyage around the North Island calling at Wellington, Marlborough Sounds whaling stations and Kawhia, and the conditions found there. Hobbs also spent time in Tonga
