from d/j:

"Looking back at the events which took us home, I wonder how it happened. There we were, soldiering on for the Queen, when all of a sudden Biddy and I were catapulted from the Australian side of the Tasman to Southland...I expect when a military cleric realises he can no longer ply his trade there's only one place he can go, and that's home."

This one came home to Invercargill.

BUSH IN OUR YARD is the story of how Frank Glen, the working clergyman, set himself up as a part-time cocky. Written in a colourful, rough-and-tumble style, it relates how the Glens' two-hectare property in the Myross Bush became the home of an assortment of sheep, ducks and the indomitable black ram, Charles Jesus Brown. As a probation officer by day, and spare-time protector of his four-footed flock, Frank Glen's time was cut out. His new duties included fencing, shearing, gardening and acting as midwife to twenty-four stubborn and single-minded ewes.

The Glens' attempts at self-sufficiency provide many hilarious and un-parsonlike incidents; but, above all, this is a story of healing, hope and restoration. In his role as Nature's temporary rural housekeeper, Frank Glen demonstrates the rewards of living and working close to the land in the unique Southland community.
