The Auckland Ferry Building sits astride Auckland's gateway from the sea, and is an Edwardian jewel in an increasingly city of concrete and glass.

Since 1912 the Ferry Building has stood stolidly at the foot of Queen Street, Auckland, as keeper of the city's gateway. Its role has been an utilitarian one ; a job suited to a pile of brick and stone, dimmed by soot and dust, ignored by the hordes of commuters who have swept daily through its unnoticed arches.

In recent times the Ferry Building has emerged from its coat of grime to take its place as something special, something different from the surrounding towers of glass and concrete, something which graces Auckland's gateway with style.

In the time since it was first conceived in 1905, the building and its parade of tenants have been an integral part of the life of a port city. They will continue to be so.

This book celebrates the Building's re-opening, after extensive refurbishing in 1988. Illustrated with more than 70 photographs, it tells a story of waterfront politics, ferries, the coming of the Harbour Bridge, and the preservation of an Auckland architectural treasure.

Stunning early black & white photographs AND coloured 1980's photographs compliment the text.
