By Ronald Cometti and John Morton

Around the coast of New Zealand lies a landscape that is never at rest. From the time of its formation millions of years ago, it has been continually transformed by wind, rain, and sea. It is also our most dynamic and populous habitat. Here, between land and sea, is an extraordinarily diverse community of coastal and marine plants and animals, exquisitely adapted and ordered, yet living in a precarious equilibrium.

Margins of the Sea presents the rich and varied beauty of this world for the first time. It is a remarkable journey around the New Zealand coastline, the result of a collaboration between an artist and a scientist, both dedicated to the study and conservation of life between the tides.

Covering 38 representative coastal locations, wildlife artist and naturalist Ronald Cometti and marine biologist John Morton have undertaken a unique study. In shoreline paintings, accompanying essays, and over 200 detailed illustrations, they look at the geology of each area, how it determines it living communities, and at the myriad species that make up these communities.

From quiet harbours, estuaries and sheltered beaches, to the seemingly inhospitable wilderness of wave-beaten cliffs and promontories, their tour is a fascinating survey that highlights the varying moods and patterns of an often neglected environment.
