Some New Zealand Founders - Marlborough, Manawatu, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Wellington

What were the backgrounds, and what were the new problems of the early New Zealand setters, the fore-runners of the immigrants who hopefully come to our shores today?

In these sketches, some brief, some longer, of a cross-section of pioneers who came to the central provinces readers may find these questions answered.

The subjects of these sketches range from the well-known to the humble and forgotten. Fitzgerald, our first Premier, is here - poet, painter, friend of Gladstone, eccentric in dress, orator whose passionate plea for the Maori still echoes through the rafters of Parliament. Te Makarini, Sir Donald McLean, who understands the Maori so well because he reminds him of the clansmen of Scotland and who dies muttering to himself in Gaelic. Parson Andrew, like Masters, drives his bullocks on the Wairarapa hills, but shouts at them in classical Greek, (which they understand) true to his background as an Oxford Don. He becomes a beloved if unorthodox headmaster.
