Hamilton, a city with a population of one hundred thousand people, straddles the Waikato River. The city is the regional headquarters of a rich agricultural area. Although the origins and early years of the settlement have been well documented in books, this volume is the first attempt to outline the history of the city from the time it was a military village on the outskirts of the British Empire in the 1860's, through periods of growth, recession, war and prosperity to the present day.

Hamilton became a borough at the end of 1877, and this history is issued to commemorate one hundred years of municipal government. Borough and City Council affairs are but one strand of this study, which also surveys Hamilton's growth, its cultural institutions, and its business and industrial activities.

An extensive series of appendices, including the first list of borough and city councillors published for half a century, supplements the main text.
