Sir William Martin. The Life of the first Chief Justice of New Zealand. Guy Lennard. 1961 1st edition. Whitcombe and Tombs, Christchurch

William Martin was born in Birmingham in 1807 and died at Torquay, Cornwall in 1880
He was employed by the Colonial Office as Chief Justice to establish a system of European land tenure and a Court system in New Zealand

Sir William Martin served as Chief Justice from 1842-1857 and travelled around New Zealand, often with Bishop Selwyn. On his journeys he observed Maori customs and developed respect for the Maori people. As a result he tried to take into account the long term welfare of Maori offenders

The Justice system is supposed to remain separate from the political system but William Martin and Bishop Selwyn commented on the taking of Maori land. This displeased the Government of the time

Details of some early murder trials and civil cases
Martin’s attitude on the Government declaring all unoccupied land would become Crown Land
Descriptions of areas of very early Auckland, with old Maori names
