Pumiceland Pioneers. The 20th century settlement of New Zealand’s Volcanic Plateau. Douglas R Martin. 2013 3rd revised edition. Oceanbooks, Mt Maunganui

The story of three pioneer families:
The ancestor of the Martin family arrived in NZ from England in 1863 and lived at Maungatoroto
The Ross family came from Inverness in 1859 and settled firstly at Te Awamutu and later at Kaiwaka, Northland, and much later again at Mamaku, near Rotorua. Their farm at Mamaku is still farmed by descendants
The Dean family, from Scotland, arrived in 1864, lived at Maramarua and the father worked as an Engineer on the Waikato River boats. A descendant pioneered an unimproved pumiceland block at Ngakuru, near Rotorua
