An Introduction to the Howick Historical Village. Alan La Roche. 1997. Howick and Districts Historical Society Inc, Auckland


Howick was home to the soldiers known as the Fencibles and their families. The soldiers lived in raupo cottages built by local Maori until their wooden cottages were built. Other Fencibles settlements were at Panmure and Otahuhu.
Howick Village today is a restoration of part of that settlement with many houses relocated form the other areas

The book contains some history together with stories of soldiers and families who lived in these cottages, and what their life was like

Lists of plants growing in the gardens (some with origins)

Newer photos show the restored village with people in costume and some of the old artefacts to be seen there
