Green Lane Saga Green Lane Hospital Auckland 1889-1982 and its development of cardiology and cardiothoracic and vascular surgery
by Edward H. Roche, Antony H. G. Roche

This book tells how Greenlane Hospital began, developed and triumphed. From its humble origin as a home for the aged poor, it grew in one generation through the intermediate stage of an infirmary into a general hospital. Even more quickly, it went on to achieve national recognition in chest medicine and international recognition in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. In fact, the development of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery at Greenlane is the main theme of the book.

The authors have endeavoured to give an account of this development which is historically and scientifically accurate and at the same time interesting and satisfying to the doctors, nurses, administrators and technicians who together created the hospital and set its standards. Special care has also been taken to make the scientific parts of the book understandable and interesting to patients and the general reader, and to give them some understanding of the aims and evolution of current methods of investigations and treatment.

The story naturally includes sketches of the principal actors in the drama, and of the various education and research bodies which have contributed so much to the knowledge and skills of the staff. These bodies, in the order in which they were set up include:
The Nee Zealand Medical Research Council, The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, The Auckland Medical Research Foundation, The National Heart Foundation of New Zealand, The Greenlane Hospital Research and Educational Trust.
