New Zealand Working People 1890-1990. Stevan Eldred-Grigg. 1990 1st edition. Dunmore Press, Palmerston North

Working people inherit a culture quite different from the middle class

This book tells of the end of the old world and the coming to the new land.
It tells of factory workers, servant girls, swaggers, miners, timber workers, railway workers, road builders, and a fair day’s pay for a fair days work
Incomes and housing are discussed with photos of housing types

Divided into 2 sections: the first from 1890 to 1935 and the second from 1935 onwards, the growth of Unions and good times and depression

Many old photos show how working and home life was for the majority of New Zealanders. Child factory and farm workers are included in these photos
Chinese and other gold miners are pictured as are Kauri gum diggers, Coal miners and flax mill workers, Maori whalers

There are also more modern photos of freezing workers, factory workers, rubbish collectors- even pub patrons. Some of these are by Ans Westra, Gil Hanly

251pp; b/w photos; index; bibliography; large s/covers; very good condition; spine sunned

This is the history of most New Zealanders, yet the one least written about
The changes throughout the years are well documented and pictured
A very interesting and informative book
