On Saturday 25 August 1979 the National Youth Choir of New Zealand gave its first concert in St Peter's Church, Wellington. Almost exactly 20 years later, on the other side of the world, the choir stood on stage in front of 5,000 people in the small Welsh town of Llangollen to receive the award for Choir of the World at the International Eisteddfod. It was a long and challenging journey from Wellington to Llangollen, from new choir to Choir of the World. There had been other successes, and not a few anxious moments when the very future of the choir seemed to be threatened. There had been three conductors, four managers, five major sponsors, four overseas tours, and a host of performances in New Zealand, England, Europe, Canada, the USA, Singapore and Australia. The choir had produced ten commercial recordings, on disc, cassette and CD. Over 420 young singers had been members during these 20 years. For the young singers, membership of the choir had been a significant, sometimes life-changing experience.
Choir of the World tells the fascinating story of the New Zealand National Youth Choir from simple beginnings to its current world-class status. In this lively account Simon Tipping looks at the choir’s first twenty years as seen through the eyes of those who took part, and those who listened and watched. As well as telling the story, he examines the reasons for the choir’s success, their repertoire, their relationships with sponsors, their policies and administration.
