United We Stand: 150 Years of Grafton United Cricket Club by ichard Irving
In the spring of 1862, two groups of cricketing pioneers joined forces for the greater good, sacrificing their own personal associations to prevent the game fading from the leisure landscape.
Among them were some of Auckland's most prominent judges, lawyers, businessmen, and a future Prime Minister of New Zealand. All were party to the birth of the United Cricket Club and instrumental in shaping its formative years.
During the rollercoaster ride that followed, the club faced wars and depressions, gold rushes and epidemics, fires and feuds - and survived. After seven changes of name, six ground relocations, three amalgamations and a change of colours, it remains standing.
This remarkable journey is the subject of United We Stand, the first book on the history of the club now known as Grafton United. It lifts the lid on the controversies, shines a light on the great players and characters, and charts the club's rise from an inaugural affiliation of just 30 to the 1000-strong membership it boasts today.
