Reed Books, 1984 edition, good condition with dustwrapper
This book is the result of a love affair between the author and the incomparable harbour of Tara, Port Nicholson, begun in his boyhood, then maturing into a deep and lasting relationship. Over the past eight years, McGill has written a whimsical and affectionate newspaper column on the history of the harbour city. From those excursions grew this more comprehensive voyage through the history of Wellington harbour. The journey begins with what is thought to be the first authentic and extensive account of Maori settlement around Te Whanganui-a-Tara and of the pakeha peoples who followed. It describes the enterprises that developed the city of Wellington, from pioneering efforts to private and public administration of the port. It includes the first history of boatbuilding in this city and the move from sailing ships to steamers and finally container shipping. For the section on the defence of the harbour, the author won the Cowan Memorial Prize for Historical Journalism. More than 100 historic photographs turn back the years...
